| The area - The town of Plomari and the small hamlet of Agios Isidoros lie within 1km of each other on the South Coast of Lesvos. Plomari is not only the second largest town on the island, the first being the capital of Mytilini, but is also known as the Ouzo capital of Lesvos. The new town was built in 1842, after the pirates’ attacks and when the inhabitants decide to leave Megalochori and live by the seaside. As years passed by, Plomari became the capital of the county. It is a port of great importance with noticeable commercial traffic, cultural life, beautiful beaches and sightseeing that makes it a great summer resort. |  | Plomari - Plomari is the right combination of peaceful and enjoyable holidays. This drink, familiar to Greeks and foreigners is a genuine Greek product. According to the rule of the European Union ouzo was recognized and established as a Greek product, and Greece the only country that has the right to produce it. The museum of ouzo belongs to the Barbagianni family which is in the ouzo industry since 1860. |  | Sightseeing - - The Cathedral which is a triple-aisled basilica, is dedicated to St. Nikolao.
- The church of Agia Paraskevi at the entrance of the town
- The church of Prophet Hlias at Plomari's higher spot. Also beautiful is the church of Agia Magdalini inspired of the temples of the Bizantio.
- The building where Plomari's High School is located, Xatzidimitriou’s house, the old plane tree which was planted in 1813 in the old neighborhood where the mansions were located.
- The folk art and the ecclesiastical museum where you can find clay idols, coins, traditional costumes etc as well as the museum of ouzo which is located in the Barbagianni’s distilleries.
- Polikentro an old soap factory of great architectural importance and an exhibition of the way soap was produced and the local history. It took its name from the great teacher of the Nation Veniamin o Lesvios.
|  | Agios Isidoros - Agios Isidoros has a unique pebbled beach which is one of the longest in Lesvos and voted as The 7th best beach in Greece due to the safety provided, the clean water and care for the environment.
Melida is a beautiful seaside settlement with a great beach and traditional old cafes. A huge imposing rock by the seaside, makes the sight unique and the place appropriate for diving.
To the west, following a path that only the local people know, is Krifi Panagia, a settlement which is one of a kind. The icon of Virgin Mary has found a shelter among the rocks, a sight truly unforgettable. The best way to visit Krifi Panagia is to use a boat.
The mountainous villages around Plomari are of great interest too. Megalohori, Palaiohori, Neohori, Plagia, Kournela, Milies are some of the noticeable settlements. |  | History - Before the destruction of Mikra Asia, in 1922, Plomari was a town with many olive presses, soap industries, pit industries, as well as ouzo distilleries.
The industrial Plomari at the beginning of the century holds:
- 12 soap industries
- 10 olive presses
- 2 pit industries
- 2 olive presses moved by steam
- many ouzo distilleries
After 1912, the soap industry was decreased and many factories like the one of Poulia’s were converted into warehouses of smoke.The production of soap stopped after the destruction of Mikra Asia. |  | | Music - Apart from the usual dancing melodies which we meet in the rest of the island, in Plomari there is a peculiar local one. It is a group song known as The Plomaritikos.
It is a slow sedentary tune, which is not being accompanied by instruments. It is the song of the poor and the workers.
Nowadays Plomaritikos is dramatically withering. It seems that the only people that still sing Plomaritiko, are the last ones of the old tradition. Young people don’t know or just don’t want to sing. |  | | Information - There is a bus daily, going to Mytilene and the other villages. The buses start from the central square.
